1/21/24 – 1/27/24

Last week the Living Faith Devotional began guiding us to read the New Testament document known as Hebrews. This week we will continue our journey by reading and studying the middle portion of the first-century sermon. If you did not read last week, you are encouraged to read or listen to chapters 1 through 5 before you begin using the plan for this week. Invite and expect the Holy Spirit to share God’s message for you each day as you read or listen to a portion of Hebrews.

 

The format of this plan is designed for you to use as much or little as you have time to use each day. Below is a guide for the daily use of this devotional:

Each Day

• Read a portion of the Psalm
• Spend a few minutes in silence as you wait in the presence of the Lord
• Read The Bible verses for the day
• Answer the question(s) using a journal or notebook, talking to someone else about them, or simply think about your responses
• Listen to and/or sing a worship song or hymn
• Pray
• Live in response to Jesus

 

DAILY MESSAGE:

Each day read part of the Psalm to begin your time set apart to be with and encounter the living God revealed in and through his Son:

 

Yes, my soul, find rest in God;

my hope comes from him.

Truly he is my rock and my salvation;

he is my fortress, I will not be shaken.

My salvation and my honor depend on God;

he is my mighty rock, my refuge.

Trust in him at all times, you people;

pour out your hearts to him,

for God is our refuge. – Psalm 62:5-8 NIV

 

SILENCE & SOLITUDE:

You are encouraged to spend a few minutes quietly alone with God after reading the verses. You may find it helpful to sit, kneel, lay down, or walk as the message rolls around in your heart and mind.

Monday – Genesis 14:17-24 & Hebrews 5:11-6:12

Tuesday – Hebrews 6:13-7:10

Wednesday – Hebrews 7:11-28

Thursday – Hebrews 8

Friday – Hebrews 9:1-10:18

Saturday – Psalm 95:1-7a & Psalm 37:3-4 (The Sabbath theme for this weekend is “WORSHIP & DELIGHT.”)

DAILY QUESTIONS:

You may find it helpful to read the verses a second time as you ask yourself these questions while pondering about God’s message to you. You may find it helpful to write your responses to the questions, or talk about them with a family member, friend, or your small group, or to simply think about them:

What do these Bible verses reveal about God and/or Jesus?

 

What do these verses reveal about people?

 

What is God’s message for me from what I read?

 

How should I respond to God’s message today and this week?

 

Luke 24:51-53 reveals that the disciples “worshiped” the resurrected Jesus with “great joy.” How am I responding to our resurrected Savior and Lord today?

 

How will I prepare to observe a full or partial Sabbath day of rest and worship this coming weekend?

 

LISTEN to and/or SING a Worship Song or Hymn to help you respond to God to express your love for the Lord. You may find it helpful to use the same song each day, or a different one on some or all of the days because of what the Bible verses bring to mind.

 

PRAY reading The Bible verse(s) again as you allow scripture to guide your prayer. You may feel the Holy Spirit guiding you to lift up joys and concerns too, then conclude with the prayer from the January 21st worship services that is a combination of the prayer Jesus taught in Matthew 6:9-13, the Greatest Commandments from Matthew 22:36-40, and the Great Commission from Matthew 28:18-20:

 

Our Father in heaven,

may Your name be kept holy.

May Your Kingdom come soon,

and Your will be done on earth,

throughout Jesus’ Church,

in Greater Hendricks County,

and among us, as it is in heaven.

We confess that Jesus is the foretold Messiah,

the Son of the living God,

our Savior and Lord.

Give us today the food we need,

and forgive us our sins,

as we have forgiven those who sin against us.

And don’t let us yield to temptation,

but rescue us from the ways of the world,

our sinful desires, and the evil one.

We know that You love us.

Help us to respond to You by worshiping and honoring

You with our thoughts, attitudes, words, and actions.

We know that You love our neighbors here,

as well as people made in Your image throughout the world.

Help us to love our neighbors as we love ourselves.

May your Spirit guide us as the people of Jesus’ Church

to fulfill his commission to go make disciples of all nations,

beginning in our homes, neighborhoods, and communities.

Thank You, Lord, that You are with us here, and as we go.

You are with us always, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Amen.
